Woodworking School
The woodworking school was one of the original projects concieved
back in 2000. A school was built and supplied in the village of
Plan de Flores. The idea was for for the youth of this small village
to learn valuable skills that would enable them to provide for
themselves and their families. Further, the objective was for
the school to produce goods for sale to help provide operating
funds to keep the school operating. The first class began Oct.
6, 2001 with 20 youth. They learned the fundamentals of
safe furniture building.
Jane Cox,
one of the woodworking project leaders had this to say:
During the summer of 2001, 5 teams from Alabama worked alongside
Honduran villagers in Plan de Flores to construct a building to
house a Woodworking School.
The dream is to teach the young men in the village of Plan de
Flores a trade that they can use to support themselves and their
families. This magnificent plan of God’s became a reality when
the first class of thirteen young men was started in early October.
The young men will ultimately learn to make furniture, but in
the meantime, during their learning process, they will make small
items that will be sold to support the school. It will take approximately
$200.00 per month to run the school and we would love to see them
self-sufficient within 1 year. We made strong bonds (to say the
least) with the people of Plan de Flores.
We continue to dream and ask God’s guidance and help as we plan
the next step. Our vision for 2002 is to provide the school with
a portable saw mill, to build a solar powered kiln for them to
dry their wood in and to build another building where the
students can assemble & finish the products which they plan
to sell.
Please watch the web-site for updates and opportunities for 2002.
Be prayerful about where you may fit in this plan of God’s.
We need: new
or used hand tools and designs for marketable items.
The school can
be kept open for $200 a month. This school is run by a local minister.
We need an instructor one week this coming summer.
