Dates Set for Honduran Mission 2011
Hi everyone!
We just wanted to let you know that we already have our 2011 dates for our Honduras trip. They are May 26-June 5, 2011. We will let you know more as we get closer. This year's team is really great, 4 docs, 3 nurses, lab tech, optometrist and others to make 18 on our team. We are leaving April 22, there is still time to make donations if you desire, we have a paypal account on our website, Limonaidhonduras.org. Or you can donate toothbrushes or washcloths.
We are planning on adding a clinic at the LaCeiba city dump, where many homeless live, including street children. It should be interesting.
We have started a longterm diabetic care clinic in Limon, and are getting regular insulin supplies through an international aid organization. We are doing yearly hemoglobin AIC's to see our progress in managing the out of control diabetics (average AIC's when we checked them last May were 13-14% with goal being below 7% - we see lots of blindness, leg amputations and strokes).
We are working on clean water projects and building community bathrooms this year. We hope to start a mosquito netting project to reduce the burden of malaria in the area (last year we treated almost 300 cases of malaria in 5 days).
We are also raising funds for a new orphanage, they currently have over 60 children living in the very inadequate building with only two toilets, which is connected to a disco where the children are exposed to noise and violence. We have a new site and plans. There are probably 500 or so street children in Limon and the surrounding areas who could benefit from a new orphanage, and a chance at schooling.
If you are at all interested in 2011, put the dates on your calendar.
Thanks so much
