Hasbro Donation Project
Our son Brad was in and out of the US this weekend as he took his Infectious Disease Pediatrics Board Certification Examination at Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Mary and I met him at the airport and chauffeured him to the exam and back. While Brad stayed in the motel doing his last minute studying and preparation, we shopped around and purchased our Christmas gifts for Brad to take back with him to Zambia. Of course we worked from a list provided by Christie. During the process we discovered Project Zambi by Hasbro which is the reason why I’m writing this email.

There are an estimated 15 million children in Africa orphaned by AIDS. The Hasbro toy company has committed at least $500,000 to help these children through the creation of a rather unique stuffed toy elephant.  We found ours in the Super Target in Chapel Hill (on sale at a $10 discount), but they are supposedly available through most any other toy store, Walmart, ToysRUs  and numerous other discount retailers.

Since Brad is an educator and AIDS researcher who works in Zambia, we are especially interested in this cause-related promotion. When Mary and I visited Zambia last year we visited a group home where AIDS orphans are matched up with AIDS widows to form new family units. Brad works almost daily with AIDS patients, both adult and children. The need is very dramatic. If there is anyone on your Christmas list who might like a cute and entertaining little elephant with a compelling social message, you may want to consider Zambi.
