AHMEN/CHIMES Mission Trip to La Moskitia, Honduras
April 1-11, 2009 This was my second trip to Honduras in seven months. This trip was to be to an area well beyond the areas visited by most mission groups. I had wanted to see more of this beautiful country, and discussed this with Bud McKinney and Jesus Cacho from C.H.I.M.E.S. We began to lay the groundwork for this trip even before we left Honduras for home last September. We wanted to travel to the area known as La Moskitia, the homeland of the Miskito Indians. This area is also populated with Garifunas who are descendants of Africans brought to the Caribbean to be slaves during the 18 th century. This area is in the Honduran State of Gracias a Dios along the northern coast of the country. “Gracias a Dios” means “Thanks to God” in Spanish. Hondurans have told me that the name may have meant to give thanks to God for getting you out of that area alive. The anglicized name of the area, the Mosquito Coast, was also less than inviting.
