Limon: A fascinating Garifina Town
What to do, where to go, whom
to see while in Limon.
Summer:
2008
Listed below are some fun and interesting things
you might want to do while working here at the Carolina Clinic.
Limon is rich
in Garifina Heritage and history. Limon is also a center for
progressive change for Honduras.
Take this opportunity to visit and get to know the people better.
Cruzado
de Evangelico Church:
Contact: Rev. David Ventura.
Many of the folks who work at the
clinic go to church there. They will welcome you to their services.
Other activates in their
church include:
Feeding Kitchen for
orphans: Christina would love for you to help serve the kids
English School: offer to spend some time with
Justo helping teach your “local dialect” of English
Computer School:
ask Pastor David if you could demonstrate whatever your skills
are.

Limon Library:
Contact person: Douglas and Corina Goff
Limon has one of the
few libraries in this area. Why not drop by for a visit, see
the building, offer to leave your books (even
the ones in English), and think about bringing down a few Spanish
books next year.

Limon Sewing School:
Contact Person: Ben
Don’t miss an opportunity to see these Garifina women
sewing typical Garifina clothing. Also, a good time to pick up
a few articles to carry home for friends and family. Also, ask
to visit their new facilities. Both of these buildings are one
block from the Clinic. Ask teachers Yolanda, Jessica and Neomi
to put on a special “fashion show” for your team.
They love to interact with the folks from Carolina Clinic.

Limon Orphanage:
Contact Person: Gloria Lacaya (the Lab Lady)
Unfortunately, there
are lots of orphans in Honduras – many
as a result of the AIDS pandemic. Limon is doing something about
their problem. Visit, talk to the kids, see some of the creative
things they are doing there. Who knows, you might find a project
you want to be part of.

Plan de Flores Woodworking School:
Contact person: Douglas Goff
For the folks who want to go a little
further, 20 min down the beach highway is a unique school. Started
by Pastor Alfredo and
wife Mariana, Indios from the mountains of Honduras. Several
years ago they talked to Sister Eleanor from Cruzado about a
way for their young parishioners to make a living and the “Woodworking
School was born”. This school is government sanctioned
so the graduates have diplomas. It is funded by folks just like
you through scholarships for the boys and girls – ranging
in age from 11 to 17 years old. The scholarships run $75/student/month.
The students learn furniture making, woodcarving, and general
woodworking. In addition to learning a trade the students get
a wonderful Christian foundation.

Punta Pietra Sewing School:
For the even more adventurous, take
a trip about 1 hour down the coastal highway and visit the Garifina
Village of Punta Pietra.
The Garifina Ladies Sewing School, Mt. Vernon South, Agricultural
Co-op, refurbished school, and library are some of the projects
you will want to visit. See what a difference one concerned group
can make when it works hand-in-hand with local Christians.
