Honduras needs your help!
This year we are going to be adding a new computer assisted
prescription - eyeglass matching routine to our expanded eye care
program. This procedure will allow us to add used glasses to our
list of potential solutions for our eye care patients. Thus we
will be able first to try to fit a pair of used glasses to a patient
needing far vision (and bifocal) glasses. If this fails we will
be able to build a pair of the "instant eyeglasses" using
an expanded inventory of frames and lenses form InFocus/EyeDeal
Eyewear. If we do not have the necessary frames or lenses to build
a satisfactory pair of glasses, then we will use our ultimate fall
back option of having the glasses built by Zenni Optical and then
send them back down with a subsequent team .
The new computer match program is being made available through Kendall
Optometry Ministry in Louisville, Kentucky. We are in the process of acquiring
a basic seed inventory of 2400 catalogued eyeglasses from KOM and have
three teams already committed to using this approach on a trial basis.
We would like to expand this initial inventory of glasses with other used
glasses that we can collect locally. We then can scan these using an automated
lens meter, code them using a bar-coding system and then add them to our
inventory. Of course we’d like to get as much of this done as possible
before the first container goes down, but we can receive and process glasses
basically anytime.
Here is where we need your help. If you have any contact with, or are willing
to make contact with, your local Lion’s Club, please solicit any
used glasses that they would provide us. In addition, ask your local optometrist
or ophthalmologist if they have any used glasses that they are willing
to donate. Lastly, if you, your friends or others in your family or church
have old used glasses that can be recycled through our expanded eye care
clinics, please collect them and send them to us or bring them to the preloading.

The
Brady Bunch
Doris and Brent Brayd, friends of Larry Pitts and now of many AHMEN folks,
have offered their services. They live in Utila and La Ceiba, speak English
and Spanish, and will be joining at least 3 teams I know about this summer.
If you need anything like an interpretor, advisors, or just a cup of Honduran
coffee with some new friends get it touch with them. They are good folks,
and they love working with AHMEN.
