LIBRARY FOR "YOUR TOWN" IN
HONDURAS
Take a look at this opportunity to put a fully equiped library
in any town in Honduras. We will be making a presentation at the
Jan 19th '08 Leadership meeting. If you are interested, contact
Rev. Carl Dickerson at cad_55@yahoo.com or myself.
One team has already started raising the $2,000 for onc complete library. In
addtion to the books, Carl has recommendations on how to get your local Rotary
Club to help your team out. He does need a listing of the towns with a description/statement
of the needs. Rev. Dickerson is planning to ask his Distrct Chruches, Pensacola,
Fla, to help with specific funding.
Rotary Club of Real de Minas-Tegucigalpa Honduras (D - 4250) and Rotary Club
of Cantonment Florida (D - 6940) along with Rotary Clubs in District 5250 in
California and Rotary International have partnered with a matching grant of $24,500
to provide books for schools in Honduras. The books will be a nice assortment
of new books in Spanish and simple English. The books will be acquired through
Give-A-Book, a 501(c)(3), at one third the retail price. The Rotary Clubs are
spending $2000 per school on books. Each school will receive at least $6000 worth
of books. The remaining funds will provide for the shipping.
If others would like to sponsor additional schools for $2000 each, the books
will be purchased with the others and included in the shipment. The schools sponsored
will receive the same set of books as the ones included in the grant.
First United Methodist Church of Opelika, Alabama has sponsored an orphanage:
Orfanatorio Emmanuel Colonia Alemania
Guaimaca-Francisco Morazan .
Alabama Honduran Mission www.honduranmissions.com is requesting sponsorship
of the following schools:
Limon, Cosuna, Ciriboya, La Ceiba (Girl's Dorm) , Plan de Flores (woodworking
school) , Rotan, Utila, Yorito, Punta Pietra .
The Limon Library will serve the town itself, the orphans of the Limon
Soup Kitchen, and the orphanage there. They already have the building,
it just doen't have many books. The librarian there is very excited. She
feels like the citizens of Limon are hungry for books.
The Ciriboya Library will be an addition to the Ciriboya Clinic to further
enhance the ideal of a "hub for Health as well as for education."
Plan de Flores has the infrastructure of the Woodworking School and is
a natural for the addition of a library. The library will be located at
the woodworking school.
Cosun has a library, just no books
