Mt. Vernon South, Spring '07
Our team consisted of 14 people including one doctor, one dentist,
one pharmacist, and two nurses. The rest of the team was involved
in construction or support for the medical personnel.
The team divided on the first two days with the construction team
working in Punta Piedra and the medical team working in Limon.
The last two days of the mission the medical team joined the construction
team in Punta Piedra.
A project to build a large porch around half the church building
in Punta Piedra with 2 restrooms and a septic system was started
and money left with a contractor for completion.
The draining of the swamp from last year had to have some more
work this year, but the malaria rate in the area around the swamp
dropped from 71% in 2006 to 43% in 2007.
The local public school building was painted inside and out including
the blackboards. Money was left to repair the wall between classrooms
in the kindergarten building.
The sewing school had just graduated their first class of 14 women.
We left enough money to pay the salaries for 2 teachers for next
year.
The medical team saw 436 patients and dispensed around 1000 prescriptions
at no charge. Team members delivered a baby girl on May 11.
Our dentist saw 92 patients and was able to do more fillings and
reconstruction this year.
