AHMEN and CHIMES Joining Forces Again
AHMEN,
CHIMES, and the Honduran Medical community have another opportunity
to join forces for the health of the Garifina communities of
Honduras. Take a look at this. Are you ready to join our “Hundred
Member Brigade?”
We've been doing great work in the Garifuna communities of Honduras, and we need
your help to keep our success moving forward.
What's happening?
From August 6th to 15th, the Garifuna Medical Brigade, led by Dr. Luther Castillo
Harry, will travel to Garifuna communities throughout the Caribbean coast of
Honduras. This team will be made up of graduates and current students at the
Latin American Medical School of Medicine in Havana
We've committed to visit
Garifuna communities along the Caribbean coast of Honduras, where
the teams will:
- Create a comprehensive assessment of the medical needs of
each community member
- Provide all possible medical attention
to those community members who need assistance
- Create a permanent medical record
for each community member
- Work with community members to plan
for future medical work in the community
Who is the Garifuna Medical Brigade?
Building upon the successful models developed by groups such
as AHMEN (Alabama Honduras Medical Education Network), CHIMES
(California-Honduras Institute for Medical and Educational Support),
the Birthing Project, and PINCC (Prevention International No
Cervical Cancer), Dr. Luther Harry launched the first Honduranean
Medical Brigade. Medical students and doctors from Cuba and Honduras
donated 10 days of their summer vacation to share their skills
with people in the Garifuna communities of Honduras. It was a
great success two years ago and this year Dr. Harry has signed
up 100 doctors and medical students for this year's trip.
Families in each community in this region open their homes
to provide free places to stay for the volunteers to sleep, and
prepare their food. However, our team still needs financial support
for parasite medicine, general medicine, food, and transportation
from one community to the next. We travel by rented school bus,
and eat locally-purchased food: rice and beans, flour and corn
tortillas, and some meat. This is where you can make a difference.
How can we keep this successful project moving forward?
1. Are you able to travel during the week of August 6th-15th?
