The eye clinic, headed by Dr. Hugh Guffey and his wife, Mary, was severly
limited since the autorefractor and tonometer were not working. Their evaluations
had to be done with the manual focometer, which takes more time. In spite of
this disadvantage, they did a fantastic job with the following statistics:
Examined 79 patients for diseases and abnormalities
Made 11 pair of prescription glasses
Distributed 68 pair of reading glasses
Obtained both pre-tests & post-tests for both far & near visual acuities
Distributed eye care hand-outs to each patient.
Individual location statistics:
Limon: 29 people - 7 pair prescription glasses -26 pair reading glasses
Punta Pierda: 50 people - 4 pair prescription glasses - 42 pair reading glasses
In addition, many came only for sun glasses - at least 360 adults and children
were given sun glasses in the two communities.
The purpose of this team was (1)to provide the usual medical/dental/eye
clinics in the Limon area (2) assess the on-going projects in
which AHMEN teams
have been involved over the years, i.e. the girl’s dorm,
wood-working school, sewing schools, soup kitchens, new church
building, etc. (3) to explore other areas in need where future
teams might work, and (4) to enhance relationships with those
with whom the teams have been working and to establish new relationships
with others doing similar work in the area, i.e. the Cuban doctors
working in the Limon area.
Meetings were held with leaders of each of the various projects to discuss
the achievements, current needs, and future needs/goals of those projects.
This provided needed in-put from the local people working with the projects
to give us their evaluation of the present status of each project and their
thoughts and desires for the future.
