| Subject: Eye Team Report for Jean Boshell Expl. Team Sept 07
The Eye Team was severely limited since
the autorefractor and tonometer not only were not working properly,
they were not
working at all. Therefore we had to use the manual focometer
which at best requires 30 to 50 minutes per individual to obtain
a prescription. And because the focometer readings are based
on a subjective determination by the patient coupled with the
fact that the Garifuna patients do not sufficiently understand
the Spanish translators, determination of a prescription frequently
is not possible. We did not even try to test far visual acuity
and prescribe prescription lenses except in the case of children
on our second day in Punta Piedra.
Despite these difficulties, with only two half-day clinics in
Limon and two half-day clinics in Punta Piedra, the Eye Team
examined 79 patients for diseases and abnormalities, made 11
pair of prescription glasses, distributed 68 pair of reading
glasses, obtained both pre-tests and post- tests for both far
and near visual acuities, and distributed eye care hand-outs
to each patient. The breakdown per community is:
Limon: 29 people examined , 7 pair of prescription glasses made,
26 pair of reading glasses distributed.
Punta Piedra: 50 people examined, 4 pair of prescription glasses
made, 42 pair of reading glasses distributed.
In addition, many people came only for sunglasses and at least
360 adults' and children's sunglasses were distributed between
the two communities.
Team members participating:
For the first three clinic days Hugh Guffey and Donna Goff(translator)
examined patients for eye diseases and abnormalities, checked
far visual acuity, administered refractions using the focometer,
and post-tested far visual acuity with the trial lens set . For
the fourth clinic day, Brent Brady and Hugh Guffey assumed these
responsibilities.
Larry Pitts and Hugh Guffey both participated in prescription
eyewear assembly.
Mary Guffey (and on the fourth clinic day, Donna Goff) administered
the near vision pre-and post-visual acuity tests and distributed
reading glasses.
