Feeding Children by Rod
Beck
Vacation Bible School is a fun way for children to learn to live
together and share God’s love with one another. The children
of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Madison know His love
has no boundaries, borders or limits. Each summer this collection
of adorable kindergarten through fifth graders take four days
out of their normal summer schedules to learn many valuable life
lessons that the Bible has to offer.
For the past two summers those lessons have transformed the hearts
of all those associated with the program and the lives of the
nearly one hundred children in Honduras.

Good Shepherd’s children have raised and donated nearly
$2000.00 including $1086.00 this year that was used to restart
a much needed soup kitchen for the children of Yorito, Honduras.
Suzanne Katschke, Director of Children’s Ministries, entrusted
the team of missionaries from Good Shepherd with the purpose of
filling a need of the children in the small mountain village of
Yorito. Upon arrival, it became obvious that the greatest challenge
that the Honduran children face is hunger. Food is especially
scarce from June until their October harvest. This is due to the
fact that without irrigation, crops can only be grown during the
rainy season of May through December. Hot meals will be prepared
by the local pastor’s wife, Mrs. Oneda Gonzales on Monday,
Wednesday and Friday every week through October 22, 2005 as a
result of the efforts of Good Shepherd’s children.
As a member of Good Shepherd’s team of missionaries and
the father of two of the children that made this ministry a reality,
I am truly amazed at how God uses us all to do Good works and
to show His love to all his children. Our children that emptied
out their piggy banks, went door to door collecting change and
sacrificed their own wants for the needs of children half a world
away are an inspiration and an example of what wonderful brothers
and sisters we can all be when we serve the least, the last and
the lost as we are instructed to do as Christians.
